CHAPTER NINE

As much as she enjoyed Elly’s company, Devon wished she was down at the police precinct with Rhy. It was torture to be left behind, assisting with mundane tasks like grocery shopping and laundry while knowing the masked man was still out there searching for her.

She found herself looking over her shoulder constantly, even though there was no reason to believe the bomber knew she was staying at the Finnegan homestead. The grocery store was busy for being a Friday. She didn’t see anyone suspicious lurking nearby, but there were strangers everywhere. She felt as if people were staring at her, knowing she didn’t belong.

When she and Elly returned home, there were more household chores to keep her busy. She didn’t mind pitching in to help. The house was big, so they split up cleaning the four bathrooms.

“I hope Rhy doesn’t expect you to do all the cleaning,” she said to Elly when they’d finished. “I mean, it’s not just women’s work.”

“Oh, Aiden does his fair share too,” Elly assured her. “And Rhy normally cleans his own room and bathroom, along with doing most of the maintenance stuff. He fixed our dryer a few months ago.” Elly grinned. “He had to use a YouTube instruction video, which was pretty funny, but it worked.”

“Glad to hear it.” She smiled and dropped the issue since how duties were doled out in managing the Finnegan home wasn’t really her business. It was just that Elly seemed to be the one doing most of the work, which didn’t sit well with her.

Oddly, she felt comfortable being in the house, considering she’d only been there a couple of days. The apartment she’d lived in for nine months had always seemed foreign to her. At the time, she’d chalked that up to having moved several times over the years.

But now she wondered if it was because the apartment had never been a real home. Certainly not like here.

She shook off the thought. There was no sense in wishing for something she couldn’t have. Besides, she was still nervous about her presence putting Elly and the other siblings in danger. She couldn’t bear the thought of anything bad happening to them.

Once they’d finished the chores, Elly told her to relax in the living room as she had DNA work to do on the computer.

She found a section of mystery and suspense books and was thrilled to find several by her favorite authors. Settling into the sofa, she began to read.

The garage door opened, and a few minutes later, she heard voices in the kitchen. She’d hoped Rhy was home, but both voices were female.

“Elly, did you buy a pot roast for Sunday dinner?”

“Yep. Where have you been, Alanna? I thought you had off the weekend.”

“I do but decided to head to the gym for a while, then met a friend for lunch.” Devon heard the refrigerator door opening and closing.

“You skipped out of Saturday chores,” Elly said without anger. “Good thing Devon helped out or I’d still be scrubbing bathrooms.
